Arti Santhanam
Director, Maryland Innovation Initiative

Dr. Santhanam joined the Maryland Technology Development Corporation (TEDCO) as the Award Manager responsible for managing the Maryland Innovation Initiative (MII) portfolio of companies. Since then, she has moved on to manage the new Life Science Investment Fund (LSIF). The LSIF is a $1.2 M program that is designed specifically to meet the needs of Maryland companies developing products that address human health concerns (therapeutics, devices etc) and that require approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for commercialization of these products.

In her role, Dr. Santhanam leverages over 15 years of experience in life science research, and a multidisciplinary background, to manage all program elements including guidelines, review, policy and portfolio management, as well as providing guidance and resources to companies as they successfully move on to their next commercialization step.

Prior to joining TEDCO, Dr. Santhanam was an independent consultant providing subject matter expertise  for conception, design and delivery of technical and commercialization solutions for life science and bio-surveillance initiatives. Her clients included early biotechnology start-ups in Maryland, public -private partnerships as well as federal agencies.

She also serves on the Board of Directors of the Annapolis-based non-profit advocacy group METAvivor Research and Support, Inc., where she established the METAvivor research program to fund groundbreaking research to treat Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. Under her directorship METAvivor has awarded over $1M in research grants.

An active member of the DC/Baltimore chapter of Women in Bio, Dr. Santhanam received a Master of Science in Clinical Biochemistry from University of Madras (India) and a PhD in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics from Rutgers University, NJ. She did her postdoctoral fellowship at the National Cancer Institute.
