Maryland Innovation Initiative - Award Manager

TEDCO is an independent entity, established by the Maryland General Assembly in 1998, to facilitate the creation of businesses and foster their growth in all regions of the State. TEDCO’s role is to be Maryland’s leading source of funding for seed capital and entrepreneurial business assistance for technology transfer and development programs. TEDCO connects emerging technology companies with federal laboratories, research universities, business incubators and specialized technical assistance.

The Maryland Innovation Initiative (MII) was created as a partnership between the State of Maryland and five Maryland academic research institutions (Johns Hopkins University, Morgan State University, University of Maryland College Park, University of Maryland Baltimore and University of Maryland Baltimore County.) The program is designed to promote commercialization of research conducted in the partnership universities and leverage each institution’s strengths.

The Award Manager is primarily responsible for interaction with the Maryland Innovation Initiative (MII) awardees during each phase of the program. This includes administration of active awards; and aid in supporting the successful completion and transition between the program phases within TEDCO.

The Award Manager will report to the MII Program Manager.

TEDCO Award Manager Responsibilities

Manage a portfolio of MII awardees. The Award Manager will meet with MII awardees to discuss project commercialization and the process for successful completion through all three phases of MII funding. This individual will work with the awardees to help them understand and prepare for MII reporting and presentations.  Other duties include:

  • Assess and review applications and provide insight and feedback on the commercial value of the technology/innovation.
  • Identify and coordinate areas of support needed by the awardee, and the appropriate university and/or state resources to support the commercialization of technology.
  • Ensure awardees are on track and compliant with project goals.
  • Work together with the MII team, providing the necessary documentation and tracking during the midterm, final report, and review processes. Establish and maintain a professional relationship with the Site Miners and Reviewers.
  • Document, manage and track interactions with the program awardees. Provide post-program Portfolio Management assistance. Ensure financial compliance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • A Bachelor’s degree (graduate degree preferred) in life sciences or biotechnology.
  • At least five years of experience with early stage commercialization of technology and university-based start-ups.
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written); a demonstrated ability to work with individuals and organizations that are key to the success of the program.
  • Experience working in an entrepreneurial ecosystem.
  • Strong attention to detail and administrative processes. Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to summarize and describe technical projects from a business-focused, commercial perspective.
  • Strong collaborative and teamwork skills


Salary range of $60,000 – $70,000, commensurate with experience, plus full benefits package. Funding for the MII program is contingent upon annual State appropriations. This position will be housed at TEDCO’s office in Columbia, Maryland.
